Mat-5.3701 Analytical Mechanics (5 cr)

Mat-5.3701 Analyyttinen Mekaniikka (5 op)

This is second course in theoretical mechanics and we try to go a little bit deeper into the subject than what is traditionally done in basic courses. The course is, however, self-contained and all students with good basic knowledge in mathematics and mechanics are welcome.

The lectures will be given in English.

Contents:

We will cover chapters 2 and 3 of the course book: F. Scheck. Mechanics. Springer-Verlag.

The highlights of the course are:

-         Lagrange equations and Hamiltons variational principle

-         The Legendre transform and Hamiltons equations

-         Noethers theorem

-         Canonical transforms

-         Liouvilles theorem

-         The mechanics of rigid bodies

-         An introduction to the geometrical aspects of mechanics.

Lectures: Prof. Rolf Stenberg , Mondays 12-14 and Wednesdays 16-17 in room Y313.

Two exceptions: On Wednesday January 18 two hours (16-18) of lectures will be given. On Wednesday January 25 no lectures will be held.

Exercises: Jarkko Niiranen , Tuesdays 14-16, room Y313.

Home exercises can be returned before each exercise in the "pocket" at the door Y321 or in the exercise classroom.

Solutions to the exercise problems are given in the exercise classroom or can be found in the "pocket" after each exercise.

Exams: April 25 Tuesday, 14-17, class Y313. Another one during the exam season in May if needed.
